Dr. Francesco Amato received his B.S. and M.S. in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Roma Tor Vergata in 2006 and 2009, respectively and the Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA (USA) in January 2017. From 2009 to 2011 he worked at SES (Luxembourg) as Ground System Engineer.
In 2012, he joined the Propagation Group at the Georgia Institute of Technology as a Fulbright Research Scholar where he developed a portable 5.8 GHz RFID reader, demonstrated microwave energy harvesting circuits on flexible substrates and pioneered work in long-range and low-powered backscattering communications reaching up to 650-meter ranges at 5.8 GHz. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa) where he is involved with research in microwave photonics, backscatter radio communications, lidar systems and radars. Dr. Amato authored 14 research articles and 4 technical reports; he is the organizing committee member for the 2017 and 2018 IEEE International Conference on RFID and he is a frequent reviewer of journals and conference proceedings. His research interests, among others, include microwave photonics, wireless power transfer, RFID sensing, electronic board prototyping on flexible substrates and the use of non-CMOS devices for enhancing backscattering communication systems.
Dr. Amato was the recipient, among others, of the Master Thesis Prize “Sebastiano e Rita Raeli” in 2009, the Fulbright Scholarship in 2012 and the William Brown Fellowship in 2015.
